Hoboken, N.J. - The women’s tennis team captured the Empire 8 regular season title after an 8-1 road win over Stevens Institute of Technology (10-2, 6-1 E8) on Sunday. The Bombers remain undefeated at 8-0 and improve to 7-0 in conference play. Senior
Rachel Gunderson (Maple Grove/Bemus Point)
moved into sole possession of third place on Ithaca’s career singles wins list with 45
. Gunderson tallied a
straight-set victory at second singles.
Junior
Natalie Jenereski (Knoch/Butler, Pa.) teamed with
Gunderson at third doubles to record an 8-1 win.
Jenereski was also a 6-1, 6-2 winner at sixth singles.
Freshmen
Melanie Cohen (Hatboro-Horsham/Ambler, Pa.) and
Melissa Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) earned a victory at second doubles. The pair improved to a team-best 9-2 record in doubles play this season.
Junior
Alyssa Jaffe (Pascack Hills/Montvale, N.J.) and sophomore
Devra Reiman (Columbia/Maplewood, N.J.) were both double winners for the Bombers. The two
paired to win at first doubles.
Jaffe posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at third singles and
Reiman tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles.
Jaffe moved to 9-2 on the year in singles play, while
Reiman improved to a team best 12-1 in singles competition.
Sophomore
Sarah Hollis (Greens Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.) tallied a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
The Bombers earned the top seed at the 2007 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Championship tournament and will play next weekend, October 13th-14th. The tournament will be hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology.
